The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the Twish Sharma ‘dowry’ death case and a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant is likely to hear the matter on Monday, May 25.

Under the Live Law, the Supreme Court registered a suo motu case titled: “In the Matter of Alleged Institutional Bias and Procedural Irregularities in the Unnatural Death of a Young Woman in the Matrimonial Home”.

The matter is scheduled to be heard on Monday by a bench comprising CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul Pancholi.

The suo motu case was registered at 6:30 pm on Saturday based on “media reports and other circumstances,” Live Law added.

What do we know about the case so far?

The case pertains to the death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma, a native of Noida, who was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12.

Twisha’s family accused Twisha’s mother-in-law of dowry harassment and torture – a claim her mother-in-law denied. Her in-laws also claimed that she was addicted to drugs.

Twisha married Bhopal resident Samarth Singh, a practicing advocate, in December 2025. Singh is the son of retired Additional District Judge (ADJ) Giribal Singh. Twisha was found hanged in her matrimonial home on May 12.

The police have registered a case and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. According to PTI, the FIR naming Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh was filed under Sections 80(2), 85 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita along with relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

According to reports, Samarth Singh surrendered to the trial court after withdrawing his anticipatory bail plea from the Madhya Pradesh High Court. He was placed in a seven-day police cell.

Moreover, Advocate Ankur Pandey, counsel representing the family of Twisha Sharma, said on Saturday that the passport of husband and main accused Samarth Singh was produced during the proceedings.

“The accused (Samarth Singh) has been remanded in police custody for seven days by the police. Passport proceedings have taken place. His lawyer has produced the passport of the accused today. There are three more pending applications which we have filed for preservation, the date is 29th,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh Police approached the apex court seeking cancellation of the anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh.

A four-member team of doctors from AIIMS Delhi flew to Bhopal to conduct the second autopsy on Twisha Sharma on the orders of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The medical team, which arrived in Bhopal on Saturday evening in a state-chartered plane, will conduct a second post-mortem on Sunday, PTI reported.
