‘Will pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi and then back to the mountains’: Sonam Wangchuk says as he is released from Medanta | Today’s news
Social activist Sonam Wangchuk was discharged from Gurgaon’s Medanta Hospital on Monday and said he will visit Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi before returning to Ladakh.
Wangchuk announced his release in a post on X, writing: “I am discharged from the hospital. I will go to Rajghat to pay my respects to Mahatma Gandhi and then back to the mountains. Thank you all and a BIG THANK YOU to the wonderful team of doctors and staff at Medanta Hospital Gurgaon.”
One of the prominent faces of the Jantar Mantar protest
Wangchuk was recuperating in Medanta after ending his 26-day fast late Thursday night. He was among the prominent faces of the CJP (Cockroach Janata Party)-led protest at Jantar Mantar.
Before starting an indefinite hunger strike on June 28, Wangchuk also visited Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. According to PTI, he started the fast in support of students protesting against alleged irregularities, including question paper leakage, in the NEET entrance medical examination.
From Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta
After a 26-day fast, Wangchuk was forcibly taken to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18, where he claimed he was being held “in custody”. He was later shifted to Medanta Hospital for treatment on the orders of the Delhi High Court
The 36-day agitation led by the CJP ended on Saturday after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as Union Education Minister. The protest began on June 20.
