Marco Rubio meets PM Modi, extends invitation to visit White House

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday (May 23, 2026).

US Ambassador Sergio Gor said Rubio had invited PM Modi on behalf of President Donald Trump to visit the US in the near future.

“I am delighted to receive the US Secretary of State, Mr. Marco Rubio. We discussed the continued progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and issues related to regional and global peace and security,” PM Modi said at X. India and the United States will continue to work closely together for the global good, he said.

“Secretary Rubio briefed Prime Minister Modi on continued progress in bilateral cooperation across a range of sectors, including defense, strategic technology, trade and investment, energy security, connectivity, education and people-to-people relations,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.

Mr. Rubio shared the American perspective on various regional and global issues, including the situation in West Asia, he said.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s continued support for peace efforts and reiterated the call for peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy, the PMO said.

“Prime Minister Modi asked Minister Rubio to convey his warm regards to President Trump and said he looked forward to further exchange of views,” the PMO said.

Ambassador Gor said Secretary Marco Rubio “extended on behalf of President Donald Trump an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House in the near future.”

Earlier in the day, Mr. Rubio began his first four-day visit to India with a visit to the Mother House, headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity of St. Teresa, in Kolkata.

Accompanied by Mr. Gore, Mr. Rubio discussed the US-India relationship on security, trade and critical technologies with Mr. Modi.

Mr. Gore went on to say on his X page that “We had a productive discussion about ways to deepen US-India cooperation in security, trade, and critical technology — areas that will strengthen both our nations and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

Mr. Gore said, “India is an important partner of the United States!”

During his visit to India, Mr Rubio will also meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting.
