CSK vs SRH preview: MS Dhoni’s potential farewell masks playoff qualifying drama in Chennai

Chennai Super Kings will play their last home match of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. It is arguably their most important match of the campaign against SunRisers Hyderabad as a loss would almost certainly knock them out of the play-off race. However, the result itself may not be the biggest story heading into the game.

With CSK playing their last home game of the season, almost all the attention is on Mahendra Singh Dhoni and whether he will play against SunRisers Hyderabad. The speculation stems from a promise that Dhoni has repeatedly made over the past few years: that he would play his final T20 match in Chennai in front of passionate fans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

MS Dhoni once said, “I hope my last T20 will be in Chennai.” And earlier he mentioned how he always planned his career – his last ODI in Ranchi, his home ground.

So yes, CSK Nation we can dream.

This option completely changed the mood around the game.

In a season full of injuries and tension, Dhoni played hide and seek with the fans. After injuring his calf at the start of IPL 2026, he has largely stayed out of the limelight. There have been several reports from the CSK camp this season suggesting that the legendary skipper was perfectly fine physically but decided to stay out to give opportunities to younger players who could become the core of the franchise in the years to come.

And truth be told, this transition has already begun to show signs of rebuilding.

The likes of Kartik Sharma, Urvil Patel and Ramakrishna Ghosh came into play this season. Along with the likes of Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis and Noor Ahmad, CSK seems to be building a young core that could keep the franchise competitive in the near future.

But the last home game of the season changes everything.

The fans want Dhoni. The fans need Dhoni.

More than anything, they want clarity. Has Dhoni played his last IPL game yet? Will he be back next season? Or will one of Indian cricket’s most iconic careers end quietly without a farewell on the field?

With Suresh Raina arriving in Chennai ahead of the match, rumors about Dhoni’s final appearance have only grown stronger in the last 48 hours.

And yet, beneath all the emotions, there remains a serious cricketing question for CSK to answer.

This is still a must win game.

If Dhoni is indeed fit and returns for CSK on Monday, it could push the side into uncharted territory in terms of combinations and balance. The current XI has evolved out of necessity over the course of the season, mainly due to injuries, and the team management now faces a difficult emotional and tactical dilemma.

Can an already injured side afford to bring back their legendary Thala in a do-or-die game against one of the most unpredictable teams in the tournament?

Or does emotion simply trump logic when it comes to MS Dhoni in Chepauk?

MS DHONI DAY IN CHENNAI

As fans continue to stress over playoff qualification scenarios and Dhoni’s possible return, the former CSK skipper had a memorable day in Chennai ahead of the match.

Dhoni visited the National Security Guard campus over the weekend and spent time with the NSG commandos where he tested various firearms under supervision. Videos and photos of the visit quickly went viral on social media, adding to the frenzy surrounding his presence in Chennai.

Once he was done with his outdoor activities, Dhoni reportedly made himself a plate of snacks and casually went to chat with the officers on the campus.

At the age of 44, there are perhaps very few athletes in world sport who command this level of fascination while appearing completely detached from the noise around them. While the entire fan base eagerly awaits a possible farewell performance, Dhoni seems to be enjoying life exactly as he always has: quietly, casually and entirely on his own terms.

He returned to the nets for another batting session the day before the game, once again sending social media into a frenzy over whether he would finally return for the final home game of the season.

CSK’S QUALIFICATION CHANCES STILL IN THEIR OWN HANDS

Apart from the emotions surrounding Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings still have a season to save.

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team slipped to sixth place after losing to Lucknow Super Giants in their last match. CSK currently have 12 points from as many matches and remain firmly in the playoffs, although their Net Run Rate of 0.027 is among the worst in the battle for the top six.

And yet there is still belief in this CSK side.

Part of that belief comes from the resilience the team and support staff have shown in managing one of the toughest campaigns in recent franchise history.

The current playing group looks vastly different from the group that started the IPL earlier this year. Even after that, CSK continued to fight hard with help fresh additions like Macneil Noronha and Kuldeep Yadav.

Kartik Sharma, who has emerged as a reliable middle-order batsman, combined with Urvil Patel’s explosiveness has added much-needed firepower to a batting unit that already includes Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

However, bowling remains a problem.

CSK were badly exposed in their previous match as opening pair Lucknow Super Giants stitched a hundred with little opposition. Against a dangerous SRH batting unit capable of changing games within the powerplay itself, Chennai’s bowling attack will once again be under immense pressure.

SRH NEED THE STICKS TO SHOW UP

With playoff qualification also at stake, SunRisers Hyderabad will look to overcome their batting inconsistencies against an equally desperate Chennai Super Kings side on Monday.

At third in the points table with 14 points from 12 matches, SRH and their run net of 0.331 still remain in a relatively comfortable position. However, Pat Cummins’ side could not afford a late collapse in the closing stages of the league stage.

A win against CSK would all but guarantee qualification, while a defeat would suddenly drag SRH into a tight battle involving Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

The biggest concern for Hyderabad has been their inconsistency with the bat.

In their previous game against Gujarat Titans, SRH looked firmly in control after restricting GT to 168/5 on a tricky surface. But their batting line-up completely collapsed under the quality pace bowling and the side was bought out for just 86.

Earlier, Hyderabad ended Punjab Kings’ losing streak in a high-scoring encounter only to suffer a heavy defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders.

This unpredictability defined SRH’s campaign.

On their day, they look capable of blowing away any attack in the tournament. But when the first wickets fall, the batting line-up often falls apart alarmingly quickly.

This is exactly why the clash against CSK is so interesting. Both sides have flaws, both are under pressure and both sides enter Monday’s game knowing that one bad night could derail their season entirely.

CHENNAI WEATHER AND COURSE CONDITIONS

The weather is expected to add another layer of intrigue to the CSK vs SRH contest.

Rain is expected in south India on Monday, bringing much-needed relief from the intense heat wave that has gripped Chennai in the past week.

The possibility of showers may mean the pitch remains under cover for a long time before the match. If that happens, the surface could become sticky and difficult to produce strikes, conditions that neither batting line-up would particularly enjoy given their recent struggles.
