Utilize government surplus land. Department for Indiramma Housing Scheme; don't create colonies in isolated places: Telangana CM

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials to ensure that the Indiramma housing projects proposed in the Core Urban Region (CURE) are located in existing dwellings so that the beneficiaries remain close to employment opportunities and basic civic infrastructure.

After reviewing the progress of the CURE Indiramma housing program with senior officials in Hyderabad on Friday (July 24), the Chief Minister instructed them to identify unused government land belonging to various departments within the Outer Circle Limits (ORR). Officials presented details of vacant land already identified in several council constituencies.

Mr. Reddy asked the officials to utilize the surplus land belonging to the police, revenue and transport departments for the housing program and allot spare land to the respective departments where necessary. He cautioned against the construction of residential colonies in isolated locations, saying such projects could become underutilized as beneficiaries would have difficulty accessing employment and livelihoods.

The chief minister emphasized that housing projects should be developed near workplaces and established residential areas, saying this approach would help economically weaker families maintain their livelihoods while benefiting from better connectivity and public services.

The state government has announced the construction of Indiramma Apartments for the urban poor in the CURE area. Each apartment will have a built-up area of about 528 square feet and a carpet area of 400 square feet. The estimated construction cost is around ₹ 11 lakh per unit, with the government providing a subsidy of ₹ 5 lakh and beneficiaries contributing the remaining ₹ 6 lakh. All costs for the land will be borne by the government.

In the first phase, the government plans to build 7,680 apartments in 17 representative districts. These include Rajendranagar, Maheshwaram, Serilingampally, Ibrahimpatnam, Malkajgiri, Nampally, Khairatabad, Jubilee Hills, Karwan, Bahadurpura, Amberpet, Kukatpally, Medchal, Quthbullapur, Sanathnagar, Secunderabad Cantonment and Malakpet.

Ministers Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy and Ponnam Prabhakar, Special Chief Secretary R&B Vikas Raj, Director General of Police CV Anand were among those present.
