Kerala University is facing repeated questions in mock test

The University of Kerala found itself mired in controversy after the same questions were repeated in different sections of the fourth semester MA examination on ‘History of Freedom Movement in India’. The problem came to light after a section of students pointed out that three questions that appeared in Part A of the question paper were repeated in Part B. The duplication effectively reduced the number of unique questions available to students.

University authorities initially defended the questionnaire by claiming that students had sufficient choice in both sections and were therefore not disadvantaged. According to the explanation, candidates were only required to answer a set number of questions from each section, so repetition was meaningless. While they had to answer three out of five questions in Part A, only five out of eight questions had to be attempted in Part B, they claimed.

Error in preparation

However, the clarification drew criticism from various sections who claimed that the duplication reflected a flaw in the question preparation process. The Department of History on Friday submitted a clarification to Kerala University Vice-Chancellor-in-Charge Mohanan Kunnummal, reiterating that the additional options meant that students did not face any difficulty during the examination. The department also reportedly claimed that no student had filed any complaint regarding the exam.

However, the Vice-Chancellor considers the matter as a serious deficiency and directed the Standing Examination Committee of the University Syndicate to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit a report at the earliest.
