Disciplinary Expert Groups Conducting Curriculum Gap Analysis at Public Universities

The state government has set up industry expert groups to conduct a comprehensive analysis of curriculum gaps in the state’s public universities compared to the world’s best universities.

Subject expert groups have been created for a total of 29 core academic disciplines, including history, economics, chemistry, computer science, physics, mathematics, criminology and astronomy.

These groups will study the gaps between state public universities and the curricula of world-class universities such as Harvard University (USA), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT-USA), London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE-UK), Peking University, Beijing (China), Tsinghua University, Beijing (China) and submit a report to the government.

Institutional review meetings conducted by the Ministry of Higher Education with state public universities have highlighted significant structural, thematic and pedagogic differences between the undergraduate curricula currently in place in Karnataka universities and those implemented by leading global universities.

In order to systematically identify, quantify and remedy these gaps in the curriculum of state public universities and to align the state higher education ecosystem with global standards of excellence, the Ministry of Higher Education proposed a rigorous, subject-specific curriculum gap analysis.

To effectively carry out this mandate, the state government has constituted groups of subject experts under the auspices of the Karnataka State Council for Higher Education (KSHEC).

These groups of subject experts will evaluate the curriculum subject-wise and submit a detailed data-driven curriculum gap analysis report that will strictly focus on eight parameters, including approaches to curriculum development in global universities, benchmarking of curriculum content, benchmarking of curriculum highlights, employability skills in world-class curricula, Karnata Global Assessment and Teaching System, Global Assessment and Teaching System Karnata Vs India Karnata Grading System. other.

These subject groups should also conduct systematic mapping to identify the critical subjects, major conceptual domains and current affairs frameworks present in the syllabus of the Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations, which are currently absent from the syllabuses of state public universities.

Speaking to The Hindu, a KSHEC official said, “The curriculum currently being adopted by our public universities does not match the current global trends, technological developments and industry needs. If our students want to compete with global challenges, major changes in the curriculum are needed. In this regard, subject expert groups have been constituted to conduct a gap analysis of our state universities with the public university curricula. The reports provided by these groups will be in the relevant changes have been made to the curriculum.’
