The Kerala University Syndicate has canceled the ₹2 crore sculpture park project

The Kerala University Syndicate on Thursday (July 23, 2026) reversed its earlier decision to set up a ₹2 crore sculpture park at the Karyavattom campus.

The sculpture park, proposed in the university’s 2025-26 budget by a previous leftist syndicate, was to feature statues of prominent figures including Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, Socrates and Rabindranath Tagore. A park was planned on both sides of the main entrance to the campus.

The syndicate, chaired by Acting Vice-Chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal, has decided to use the earmarked funds to create a campus garden and improve student facilities.

The Syndicate has also decided to submit project proposals for securing financial assistance under the Union Government’s Khelo India scheme for upgradation of sports infrastructure in the university campus.

Additionally, the meeting constituted a sub-committee of the Syndicate to prepare a comprehensive policy framework for autonomous colleges affiliated to Kerala University. Before submitting the report, the committee will consult the managements of the autonomous colleges and examine the relevant University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations, government guidelines and university statutes.

Regarding the land encroachment case related to the AKG Centre, the Syndicate has decided to file a counter-affidavit in the Kerala High Court and complete the survey and delineation of the University’s land within the stipulated time frame.
