The batting revolution of the Indian Premier League has reached another extreme in IPL 2026 where even a score above 200 no longer guarantees safety. When Royal Challengers Bengaluru smashed 222/4 against Punjab Kings on Sunday, the tournament officially registered its 53rd 200-plus this season – the highest in the history of a single edition of the IPL.Most total of 200 and more in an IPL edition53 in 202652 in 202541 in 202437 in 202318 in 2022What makes the number even more staggering is the trend over the past few years. IPL 2025 had earlier set the record with 52 totals above 200. Before that, IPL 2024 witnessed 41 such scores while IPL 2023 had 37. Go back just four years to IPL 2022 and the number was only 18. The increase perfectly captures how dramatically T20 batting has evolved. Aggressive powerplay intent, fearless middle-order batting and specialist finishers have completely changed the definition of a ‘good total’ in the IPL. The introduction of the Impact Player rule further tipped the balance towards the batsmen, allowing teams to field another striker while giving players even more freedom to attack from the ball first. What used to be considered a winning match is now often seen as a fair draw. RCB’s change against PBKS was another reminder of this transformation. Virat Kohli laid the foundation with a smooth 58 off 37 balls while Devdutt Padikkal kept the momentum going with 45 off 25 deliveries. But it was Venkatesh Iyer who turned the innings into utter carnage as he smashed an unbeaten 73 off just 40 balls. Even after crossing 220, RCB still couldn’t feel completely safe as such totals are becoming more and more chaseable in modern IPL cricket. Earlier this season, Punjab Kings chased down 265 against Delhi Capitals, a result that perfectly summed up the fearless era of batting the league had entered. Batsmen now attack from the first delivery, teams regularly score more than 10 runs in an entire innings and death overs have become borderline exhibitions. No more 200 extras in IPL 2026. It is simply the starting point of the competition.
