More than 7000 tanks to be rejuvenated in Vizianagaram district under Jala Dhara-Jala Harati scheme.
As many as 7062 reservoirs will be rejuvenated under the Jala Dhara-Jala Harathi scheme launched to improve ground water and ensure sufficient water for irrigation needs in Vizianagaram district.
Collector S. Ramsundar Reddy and Joint Collector S. Sedhu Madhavan directed officials of the District Water Management Agency to identify works such as strengthening of embankments, removal of silt and inter-reservoir linking, among others.
The work had to be completed within a few months so that rainwater could be adequately stored for the benefit of farmers during the Kharif season.
The government will also focus on construction of 4801 canals in the district under this programme. Mr. Sedhu Madhavan directed the officials concerned to submit details of the progress of the work every week. Speaking to The Hindu here, he said the scheme would benefit the agriculture sector as many farmers depend on the tanks for their irrigation needs.
He said work has started on 2573 tanks out of 7062 tanks selected for Jala Harathi programme. He hoped that the groundwater levels would improve significantly after all the work was completed. He hoped that with the development of reservoirs in the district, cattle would also get enough water.
