IMD issues red warning for Himachal Pradesh, yellow for Delhi and other states as monsoon intensifies in India | Today’s news
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast active monsoon conditions over northwest and northeast India for the next four to five days, issuing a red alert for Himachal Pradesh and an orange and yellow alert for several other parts of the country.
The Meteorological Agency today warned of very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Jammu, Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, while subdued rainfall is expected over parts of western and southern India over the next seven days.
Red alert in Himachal Pradesh
The IMD has issued a red alert for Himachal Pradesh and advised travelers to avoid traveling to the hill state as the rain could cause flash floods, landslides and waterlogging.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Maharashtra have been placed under orange or yellow alert.
The IMD has predicted that the ongoing period of heavy rains will continue from July 21 to July 27. While rainfall intensity is expected to vary, several states are likely to see frequent showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Weather in Delhi
Rain returned to Delhi late on Monday and continued till Tuesday morning, ending more than a week of dry spell. Showers brought relief from the heat and temperatures dropped noticeably across the capital. The IMD has predicted more rainfall in the next two days.
The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for Delhi on Tuesday and Wednesday. A few light to moderate showers with thunderstorms and strong winds are expected in most places until midday, while isolated areas may experience heavy rainfall. For the rest of the day, the IMD has predicted “one or two” spells of very light to light rain. A similar forecast was issued for Wednesday.
Light to moderate showers are likely in the morning on Thursday, followed by further periods between the afternoon and evening. However, no weather advisory has yet been issued for the day. IMD has also predicted very light to light rain on Friday, dry weather is expected from Saturday to Monday.
The fresh rain also led to a significant drop in daytime temperatures. Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 31.6°C on Monday, 6.7°C lower than Sunday’s maximum of 38.8°C. According to the IMD, the maximum temperature is expected to be between 29°C and 31°C on Tuesday.
