Monsoon will remain active over northwest, east and northeast India; IMD warns of heavy rain, flash floods | Today’s news
Monsoon activity is expected to remain strong over northwest, east and northeast India during the next six to seven days, while rainfall is likely to remain subdued over western, central and southern peninsular India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.
The forecast indicates continued heavy rainfall in several northern and northeastern states, supporting kharif sowing in the northwestern plains while increasing the risk of flash floods and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
The Met office has predicted widespread rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and parts of Rajasthan till July 25, which will promote kharif sowing in the northwestern plains and provide relief from wet weather.

In East and Northeast India, widespread rainfall is expected in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and other northeastern states.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh on 20 July and during 24-25 July. July; Assam & Meghalaya during 21-25 July; and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during 20–25 july
Flood warning
The IMD also warned of a low to moderate risk of flash floods in several districts of Uttarakhand and Assam-Meghalaya during the next 24 hours, with surface runoff and flooding in low-lying areas due to saturated soil conditions.
Meanwhile, exceptionally heavy rainfall was recorded over Meghalaya during the last 24 hours, while very heavy rainfall lashed Jammu and Kashmir, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, East Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Heat wave persisted in isolated parts of Jammu and Kashmir despite active monsoon.

South muted
In contrast, monsoon activity is expected to remain muted over much of western, central and southern India during the next week, although widespread rainfall is likely to continue along the west coast, according to the IMD.
According to IMD, isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Madhya Maharashtra during 20-22. July and 25 July and over Marathwada during 20-22 July and 24-25 july Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch are forecast to experience isolated to scattered rainfall with thundershowers and gusty winds of up to 60 kmph over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on July 23.
Monsoon activity is expected to remain muted over much of South India during the next week, with only isolated to scattered rainfall forecast over Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal between 20 and 25 July.
However, precipitation is expected to remain active along the west coast. IMD predicts moderate to widespread rainfall over coastal Karnataka during 20-25 July, while Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep are likely to see widespread showers on July 20 and again on July 24-25. july
