US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrives in Kolkata ahead of high-level talks with PM Modi in Delhi | Today’s news
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Kolkata on Saturday morning on his four-day diplomatic trip to India. The city begins the visit.
Rubio’s visit to Calcutta carries considerable political and historical resonance — ending a 14-year hiatus since the last visit by a US secretary of state. Rubio became the first US Secretary of State to enter Calcutta since Hillary Clinton’s visit in May 2012.
His visit to the eastern capital comes just weeks after West Bengal witnessed a landmark political transition with the BJP-led government taking office.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said in a post on X: “Secretary Marco Rubio landed in Calcutta. This is his first trip to India. We will invite PM @narendramodi to New Delhi later today. Trade, technology, defense, QUAD and many more things to discuss and progress in the next few days!”
Rubio’s Calcutta Itinerary
The US State Department has not yet released Rubio’s Calcutta itinerary; however, according to news agency PTI, citing US consulate sources, the US secretary of state is likely to visit the Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity of Saint Teresa in central Kolkata.
