The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has decided to tread carefully on two politically sensitive issues facing the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government – the continuation of PM SHRI’s centrally sponsored program and the Kerala High Court’s decision to keep the Kerala State Waqf Board functioning.
In its first full state executive meeting since the UDF government assumed office in May, held in Kozhikode on Saturday (July 18), the party decided not to take a public stand either for or against the government on the two issues until it completes internal consultations.
The meeting was held against the backdrop of growing concern within the party over the appointment of personal staff of Muslim League ministers, the PM SHRI scheme controversy, developments regarding the Waqf Board, the appointment of individuals allegedly affiliated to right-wing organizations to key government posts and other political issues.
A senior IUML leader who attended the meeting said the leadership did not hold a detailed discussion on the PM SHRI scheme and instead decided to discuss the issue further at a smaller party forum before arriving at an official position. On the Waqf issue, the leader noted that the matter is currently being heard in court and the party will study the legal and political aspects in detail before formulating its position.
For the time being, he said, the party has decided not to publicly oppose the government or extend open support on either issue. “IUML plans to hold detailed internal consultations to evolve a position that will protect both the interests of the UDF government and the interests of the party before making its stand public,” the leader added.
Meanwhile, addressing the media after the meeting, IUML National General Secretary and Industries Minister PK Kunhalikutty said that the PM SHRI scheme was a trap created by the previous Left Democratic Front government. “The UDF government has set up a sub-committee and it has been tasked to look into how the issue can be resolved in a manner that is consistent with the secular values of Kerala,” he added.
Mr. Kunhalikutty said that the final opinion would be taken after considering the recommendations of the sub-committee.
On the Waqf issue, he said that the matter is before the court and the party will take a suitable stand after examining all aspects.
On the issue of appointment of personal staff of Muslim League ministers, party sources said the meeting decided to look into it further. The party leadership has ordered all party functionaries, including ministers, to avoid controversies.
