Shashi Tharoor was rescued after being trapped in a hotel lift

Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor was rescued after he was trapped in a lift at a hotel near PMG in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday. He arrived at the hotel to attend an event and was heading to the sixth floor when the elevator broke down. Apart from the MP and his staff, three other people were stuck in the lift, official sources said.

The hotel staff first tried to open the elevator but were unsuccessful. Firefighters from Kerala were then called to the scene. Using a hydraulic spreader, the firemen managed to open the lift and safely free the MP and other passengers who were trapped for almost 30 minutes.

After being rescued, Dr Tharoor thanked the Fire and Rescue Service personnel for their quick response. “Everyone is fine. The hotel staff were the first but there was nothing they could do. Then they decided to call the fire brigade. The fire brigade arrived within five minutes of the call and I sincerely thank them,” he said.
