For the first time, interest for the financial year 2025-26 on deposits in Provident Fund accounts was credited to all 34 million accounts at once on 15 July. Union Labor Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had earlier said that after the implementation of the Centralized IT Enabled Services (CITES) project to update the database of the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), 4 lakh4 interest over ₂ will be credited to the accounts of 34 million members on July 15.

The Union Finance Ministry recently approved the recommendation of the Central Board of Trustees of EPFO to provide interest at 8.25%. A senior EPFO official said the accrued interest will be visible to all members when they open their passbook for 2025-26.

Under the new system, interest would be automatically processed and then verified by local authorities before being credited to members’ accounts. “Members will be able to view the interest credit on their passbooks till July 15. Earlier, once the EPF interest rate was announced, it usually took till October or November for the interest to be credited,” the minister said.
