Tuchel’s decisions cost us: England legends kill head coach for semi-final mistake

Thomas Tuchel has come under heavy criticism from several former England internationals after the Three Lions surrendered a second-half lead to lose 2-1 to Argentina in their World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, with Wayne Rooney leading the criticism as he claimed the German coach’s tactical decisions “cost” us a place in the final.

England looked on course to reach their first World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon put them ahead in the 55th minute. However, Lionel Scaloni’s side responded through Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez to complete another comeback and book a meeting with Spain in Sunday’s final.

The defeat immediately sparked debate about Tuchel’s game management, with several members of England’s so-called “golden generation” questioning why the Three Lions abandoned the aggressive approach that frustrated Argentina for more than an hour.

TOO PASSIVE

For Rooney, the breakthrough came not in Argentina’s revival, but in England’s response after taking the lead.

“Once we got the first goal, we didn’t want to go for the second,” Rooney said on the BBC.

“The decisions Tuchel made cost us tonight. It was too passive.”

The former England captain questioned Tuchel’s move to a more defensive approach, claiming he had handed control of the game to the reigning world champions.

Rooney blames Tuchel for England’s loss to Argentina:

“I think the decisions that Thomas Tuchel made, we have to be honest, cost us tonight.

i agree These defensive changes gave Argentina, and Messi in particular, too much control and momentum. Expensive vs quality like pic.twitter.com/CxV63diPHk— J Stewart (@tiffic_stuff_) July 15, 2026

“The gamble he took was to go with five at the back, which allowed them to dictate the game,” Rooney said.

“Top managers counter what’s going on and don’t go deeper. What they do is go further forward and try to change the pace and rhythm of the game. I think he got it wrong.”

Rooney added that England’s biggest test of the tournament exposed the team’s shortcomings.

“It won’t go against this team, the world champions. This was the biggest test and we failed.”

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards echoed Rooney’s assessment and insisted England were pulling back after Gordon’s goal played right into Argentina’s hands.

“When England scored the first goal, they should have gone for the second,” Richards said.

“Yes, you respect their quality, but going down deep allowed Argentina to get into their flow.

Richards also questioned Tuchel’s leadership in the game, saying the tactical changes made life too comfortable for Lionel Messi and his teammates.

“For all they did, they were excellent, kicking at the right times and getting over the line. But you have to look at the manager and his decisions. They made it too easy for Argentina in the second half.”

ENGLISH KNOWN ERROR

While Rooney and Richards focused on Tuchel’s tactical progressOther former England internationals felt the defeat reflected a wider problem that has repeatedly surfaced at major tournaments.

Alan Shearer believed Argentina fully deserved their place in the final after their response to being behind.

“I think the better team won. You have to be open and honest about that,” said Shearer.

“Their reaction was great. How they didn’t panic, how they stuck to their game plan and believed in what they were doing. The substitutions worked for them and you have to respect the way they came back into the game.”

Gary Neville also pointed to England’s mentality, suggesting the semi-final followed a familiar pattern.

“It’s about the mentality and belief in England and a bit of quality to keep the ball,” Neville said on the cover.

“I can’t believe how many times I’ve seen that from England in the tournament. Michael Owen believes England lacked courage in their semi-final clash with Argentina. (Image: Reuters)

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen was equally critical, claiming England had abandoned the courage that had put them in a winning position.

“We are a better team than Argentina, no doubt about that. But we deserved to beat in the end. In fact it could have been 4-1,” Owen wrote on X.

“Bringing on three defenders at 1-0. What message does that send?”

Owen compared England’s progress to Spain’s semi-final victory over France, arguing that bravery meant maintaining possession under pressure rather than retreating deeper.

Defeat means England will now face France in the play-off for third place, while Argentina’s comeback will keep alive their hopes of becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend their FIFA World Cup title.
