Chennai police have arrested a man for trying to bribe Usilampatti TVK MLA Vijay

The Greater Chennai Police on Tuesday (July 14, 2026) arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with an alleged attempt to bribe Usilampatti Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA Vijay M.

On Tuesday, the police arrested the accused Ganesan (41) from Usilampatti in Madurai district. Ganesan allegedly negotiated with an associate of the TVK MLA from Usilampatti in an attempt to influence the legislator’s vote during a proposed resolution against Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar, police said.

Ganesan was produced before the court on Tuesday and remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is underway.

This case was combined with an earlier case registered by the Triplicane police in Chennai after N. Elaiyaraja, Uthangarai TVK MLA from Krishnagiri district, lodged a complaint with the Chennai police commissioner on June 29. In his complaint, he alleged that a man identifying himself as Thirunavukkarasu, who claimed to be conducting a one-on-one meeting of the poll leader on behalf of IPDS, a major political party.

According to the complaint, when the MLA refused, the caller allegedly contacted him again claiming that a resolution would be filed against the Speaker. He reportedly offered up to ₹35 million to vote as directed during the proposed poll. When the MLA refused, the caller allegedly threatened him and his family with dire consequences if he divulged the conversation.

Based on the complaint, the police had earlier arrested 11 accused including Thirunavukkaras in connection with the alleged conspiracy between July 1 and July 9.
