Piers Morgan’s ‘political’ post for Harry Kane: Messi critic’s message ahead of Argentina v England faces backlash | Today’s news
Piers Morgan’s political post ahead of Argentina v England faces backlash on social media. The British broadcaster has shared a message for Harry Kane and his team as they face Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
“England are two wins away from being crowned world champions in America, just days after the USA celebrated 250 years since they kicked us out. If that doesn’t inspire Harry Kane and his team to glory, nothing will. Come on guys, do it for King George III,” he wrote.
Social media users were quick to react.
“Don’t bring politics into football. That’s wrong,” wrote one of them.
“Everybody kicked you around the world right? Looking at your post it seems you haven’t learned from the kicks,” another user wrote.
One user commented: “Piers, man, read the room. I know your post was TIC, but come on. Unless you want to lose your American audience.”

Another user commented, “I’ll tell you the same thing they keep telling us Southerners, ‘Get over it, you’re a loser.'”
“Your fans are the shame of Britain! No one in the world of football likes you and never will…so it doesn’t really matter…all you bring home is shame,” chimed in another.
One user wrote: “What a strange post! Trying to motivate something that happened 250 years ago. Get a life Piers!”
“There would be nothing sweeter than seeing the goat you denigrated with your shameless disrespect rob you of the joy of England winning the cup,” another user wrote, referring to Lionel Messi.

Morgan on Messi
Piers Morgan is widely known for his constant criticism of Lionel Messi. This stems primarily from his close friendship with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ahead of the England v Argentina game, Morgan completely dismissed concerns about Messi. He claimed that the real superstar of the tournament was Jude Bellingham, not Messi.
After Argentina’s victory over Algeria, Morgan was accused by the referee of procrastinating. He suggested that Messi received preferential treatment because of his status.
After Messi missed a penalty against Austria, Morgan publicly mocked him. Leo later scored twice to help Argentina to a comfortable victory in that match.
Morgan consistently excludes Messi from his list of the greatest players of all time. His all-time preferred eleven are Ronaldo, Ronaldo Nazario and Maradona. He claims that Messi is not even the best player in history for Argentina. Instead, he credits Maradona, citing Messi’s comfortable surroundings at Barcelona.

After Argentina won the 2022 World Cup, Morgan repeatedly mocked Messi’s celebrations. However, fans noticed that Morgan once called Messi the undisputed GOAT. Those earlier tweets have since been deleted or completely contradicted, especially after he befriended CR7.
