Messi’s heated exchange with Portugal’s World Cup referee has gone viral: Don’t be disrespectful

Lionel Messi was involved in a tense exchange with Portuguese referee Joao Pinheiro during Argentina’s World Cup quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday, with the confrontation quickly going viral on social media.

The incident occurred during Argentina’s dramatic 3-1 overtime victory over 10-man SwitzerlandA result that set the defending champions up for a sensational semi-final against England in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Messi’s side kept alive their bid to become the first nation to successfully defend the World Cup since Brazil in 1962, but one of the biggest points of the competition came long before the final whistle.

The exchange took place in the first half as Switzerland prepared for a free-kick. Standing in Argentina’s defensive wall, Messi looked displeased with the way Pinheiro ordered him to move the required distance.

TV cameras caught the Argentina captain reacting immediately after re-approaching the referee after the free-kick was awarded. According to the broadcast, Messi told the official: “Talk to me properly. Don’t disrespect me. Talk to me properly. I spoke to you properly.”

Despite the lively conversation, Messi remained composed throughout the exchange, keeping his hands behind his back as he spoke to the referee. Pinheiro did not reprimand the Argentine captain and the brief confrontation had no effect on the match.

The clip quickly went viral on social media and became one of the defining moments of the drama-filled quarter-final.

Argentina eventually prevailed after Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez struck in extra time to seal a 3-1 victory, ending Switzerland’s impressive run at the World Cup and sending the reigning champions into the last four.

WHO IS JOAO PINHEIRO?
