The death toll from the collapse of a waste processing unit at Moshi near Pune has risen to eight, even as 14 of the estimated 23 people trapped inside the debris have been rescued, a senior official said on Saturday evening.
One person is still missing and search operations are underway three days after the incident, Pimpri Chinchwad District Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi said.
A three-storey administrative building of a waste-to-energy (WTE) plant run by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation collapsed on Wednesday after an adjacent pile of garbage gave way and fell on the structure as a landslide.
Around 15 excavators, including specialized demolition machines, were involved in the rescue operation by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Army and other agencies, officials said.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar visited the site and reviewed the rescue operation. Heavy rain and toxic gases emanating from the garbage pile made the rescue operation difficult, she said.
“An investigation into the unfortunate incident is underway. Appropriate measures will be taken based on the results of the investigation. Financial assistance is being provided by the government and the city office,” she added.
