Three people were arrested on Saturday (July 11, 2026) for their alleged involvement in the lynching of a man after the body of an 11-year-old girl was found in West Bengal after she was raped and murdered, police said.
This took the total number of arrests in the case to five, they said.
The girl went missing on July 4 after she left her home in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district to buy a birthday present for a friend. Her family filed a missing complaint with the police and the body was found a day later.
Immediately after his recovery, a mob lynched a man, Indrajit Mondal, who suspected his involvement in the case. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari later said that Mondal was innocent and that those involved in the lynching would be charged with murder.
Mr. Adhikari met the victim’s family on Saturday before visiting Mondal’s house.
A senior police officer said, “A thorough investigation is underway. We have already arrested five accused in the lynching case. No one will be spared.”
Mr. Adhikari visited Baruipur soon after the incident when he met the victim’s family at the district police headquarters. He also met Mondal’s family and held a meeting with senior police officers before announcing that he would be back within a week.
The local administration repaired dilapidated roads before the chief minister’s visit, and Mondal’s house, which was vandalized by a mob after the lynching, was also repaired. Officials extend help to Mondal’s elderly parents.
