Gujarat police traced 701 missing persons in two weeks as part of a nationwide drive called Operation Milap, officials said. The operation was launched in early May across the state to reopen and review pending missing persons cases.

According to official figures, 24,767 people have been reported missing in Gujarat since 2007.

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said police stations across the state traced 701 people between May 7 and May 21 and reunited them with their families.

He said the government has provided the necessary resources for the drive.

Additional Director General of Police (CID Crime and Railways) Ajay Choudhary said the operation is based on technical and human intelligence inputs and includes review of old case records and fresh verification at field level.

Police said the trip also includes checking digital records, social media activity, transport sites and shelters, and revisiting complainants and witnesses.

Officials said some of the cases are linked to trafficking networks and criminal groups involved in child trafficking and related crimes.

The police said that as part of the operation, work has been restarted on several old cases, including those registered since 2007.
