Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday (July 8, 2026) paid a surprise visit to the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology (IOG) and Government Hospital for Women and Children at Egmore in Chennai.

At the century-old institution, Mr. Vijay visited the wards and intensive care unit and inquired about the health of mothers undergoing treatment at the hospital. He also sought feedback from them regarding the treatment provided and the facilities available. Mr. Vijay was holding several newborns in his arms.

Accompanied by Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister KG Arunraj and Health Minister Darez Ahamed, the Chief Minister asked about the medical services provided at the hospital.

In an interview with journalists later, Dr. Arunraj said the Chief Minister has directed the officials to draw up a plan to develop the hospital in an integrated facility with all facilities. He admitted that complaints had been received about staff demanding bribes to show newborns to their families after delivery and said strict instructions had been issued to release those found guilty. The public can lodge complaints through the 104-hour health helpline.
