Argentinian referee for France quarter-final? Coach Deschamps deflects pre-match drama
Didier Deschamps has never been one to laugh and on the eve of France’s World Cup quarter-final against Morocco, the Les Bleus manager delivered a masterclass in psychological deviance.
The build-up to the sensational encounter at the Boston Stadium was dominated by FIFA’s decision to appoint an all-Argentine management crew led by 44-year-old referee Facundo Tello. Given the fiercely heated and bitter rivalry that has simmered between France and Argentina since their storied 2022 final in Doha, the choice has raised serious eyebrows across the footballing world.
But instead of taking the bait and criticizing the meeting, Deschamps completely flipped the script and used the pre-match press conference to take a sharp swipe at his detractors.
“We have to deal with it. I trust the referees. Our opponent is Morocco, not the referees,” said Deschamps firmly.
However, the French tactician could not resist hitting out at those critics, especially sections of the North African media who did scrutinized by French referee Francois Letexier following Argentina’s dramatic and controversial 3-2 Round of 16 victory over Egypt.
“Hopefully our (officials) are as good as Mr. Letexier was,” he said.
CALL FOR CALM
The manager’s calm, slightly belligerent confidence clearly rubbed off on the rest of the French squad. Back-up goalkeeper Robin Risser also backed the officials, offering a refreshing dose of realism while urging his teammates to ignore any creeping digital paranoia.
“There’s been some bitterness (between France and Argentina) for a few years now since the last final, but that’s part of the game,” Risser said.
“If those referees are there, it’s because they’re at the level of the competition.
For the player, the historical baggage between Paris and Buenos Aires represents an external distraction; the task is completely limited to 90 minutes on the pitch.
With the refereeing debate firmly put to bed by the French camp, the focus shifts directly to the formidable challenge posed by Morocco. The Atlas Lions booked their place in the last eight with a commanding 3-0 win over Canada and Deschamps is under no illusions about the tactical battle ahead.
“They don’t have the profile of Paraguay,” warned Deschamps, referring to his side’s narrow 1-0 triumph in the round of 16.
“We will have to be very efficient because this Morocco is very high quality. The level goes up as you go up the mountain.”
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi also completely downplayed the importance of Tello’s all-Argentine crew, expressing complete confidence in their elite tournament experience.
Referees at this World Cup have exploded into a massive talking point, fto make accusations of favoring football giants. Egypt’s furious collapse over Francois Letexier is a perfect example; they felt completely robbed after a disallowed goal, a disallowed penalty and an unpunished set-piece foul on Argentina’s 93rd-minute winner all went against them.
