Palaniswami appeals to the Center to maintain the state quota of medical posts
All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday urged the Center to ensure that appropriate legislation is made to ensure that the state’s quota of seats in private institutions of higher education for medicine and engineering are not reduced when such institutions are deemed universities.
He said in a statement that the Union government and the University Grants Commission (UGC) must insist on such a provision. Referring to reports of some private medical colleges becoming deemed universities and consequent loss of medical seats to the state, Mr. Palaniswami wanted the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led government to take immediate steps to improve the infrastructure and quality of government medical colleges and get additional seats, the progress of which would balance the loss of seats to the state.
Meanwhile, at the party headquarters, Mr. Palaniswami reviewed the party’s performance in Tiruchi district, which was attended by Lalgudi legislator Leema Rose Martin, among others, one of the 25 rebels who supported the TVK government in the assembly at the time of the trust motion in May.
