MP: Woman gives birth to quadruplets in car, newborns die because ambulance doesn’t arrive

A woman gave birth to quadruplets in an autorickshaw while being rushed to a hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandla district, but all four babies died shortly after birth.

Her family claimed the absence of an ambulance to transport her cost the newborn her life on Tuesday (July 7, 2026), while medics said the babies succumbed to premature birth and their incomplete development.

Her husband Ganesh Singaram claimed that if an ambulance had been available in time, his children could have been saved.

District Chief Medical Officer and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr. DJ Mohanty said Rajni Singaram, a resident of Naigaon, was brought to the government health center in Ghuthas in a private vehicle after she felt labor pains in her seventh month of pregnancy.

“Due to her critical condition, she was taken to the community health center in Bichhiya in an autorickshaw,” the official said.

But by the time she reached the community health center, she had given birth to four children in a private vehicle, said Dr. Mohanty and added, “All the four children, three girls and a boy, died as they were premature and weighed around 1.5 kg each.”

The official further said that the woman has been admitted to Bichhiya Community Health Center and is out of danger.

However, the woman’s family members claimed that they called the emergency services after she gave birth, but when there was no response, they took her to the hospital in an autorickshaw.

Asked about the allegations, Mandla District Magistrate Rahul Namdev Dhote told PTI that he has not received any complaint in this regard so far. “If a complaint is received, the matter will be investigated and necessary action will be taken,” he added.
