Eggs were thrown on the car of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Minakshi Mukherjee in Cooch Behar on Tuesday (July 7, 2026).

This is the first time a Left leader has faced such an attack after senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders were pelted with eggs across the state following their election defeat earlier this year.

Ms Mukherjee was in the Sitalkuchi area of Cooch Behar to meet the family of late party worker Monta Miya when the incident took place.

The CPI(M) central committee member was accompanied by former party MP Alakesh Das and several other leaders at the time of the incident. Local leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) carried out the attack, CPI(M) leaders alleged.

Ms Mukherjee documented the attack in a video posted on her social media handles. She accused the local police of inaction over the death of her party worker and the egg incident. Why was she attacked, what was her fault, she asked.

“All this happened in front of the police. They stood and watched. Who do they favor? They worked for Trinamool all these years and now they are working for BJP. The government has changed in Bengal, but rule of law could not be established here,” Ms Mukherjee said in the video.

Later, CPI(M) leaders staged a protest at the local police station. The Superintendent of Police assured them that at least two of the miscreants who attacked her car had been arrested, according to Ms. Mukherjee, and her party had withdrawn the protest.

“First they wanted to punish the corrupt, then they started throwing eggs. Now it has become BJP’s tactic to stop all free movement of all opposition leaders,” CPI(M) state secretary Mohammad Salim said on Tuesday (July 7, 2026) after the attack.

Under the Trinamool regime, party leaders walked around with guns and did not allow opposition leaders, including the BJP, “to go anywhere”, Salim said. Again, similar allegations have come to the fore against the BJP, he added.

Ever since they were impeached on May 4, Trinamool leaders including general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, MP Mahua Moitra, MLA Madan Mitra and Kunal Ghosh and several others have been pelting eggs on them in the state.

A public interest litigation filed in the Calcutta High Court says such attacks have damaged the democratic atmosphere of the place.
