A building on MG Road in Kochi tilts after an attempt is made to lift it
KOCHI
In a bizarre incident, a two-storied building toppled onto another multi-storied building next to it after a hydraulic jack used for lifting foundations during renovation work along MG Road in Kochi reportedly broke loose around 6 pm on Tuesday.
While the lower part of the building sustained minor damage, there were no casualties as the building was unoccupied. The foundation lifting work was carried out by a private contractor from Chennai.
This happened when the building was raised to raise its foundation to prevent flooding on the ground floor during the monsoon. However, after the structure was raised, the jack allegedly slipped and the building leaned against an adjacent structure that housed several private businesses.
“We have evacuated the residents and nearby residents. There is no other option but to demolish the leaning building. The concerned engineers are likely to inspect the building and take necessary action on Wednesday,” sources at Club Road fire station said.
