The ₹90 crore Sathuvacari – VIT High Road, off the Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) in Vellore, will be opened to the public next month as the State Highways has accelerated the road laying work in the multi-crore project.
Highway officials said that the new stretch, which is a four-lane route, between Sathuvacari and Kangeyanallur village near VIT campus, was aimed at relieving Katpadi and surrounding areas from the existing traffic jam “Major part of the road work, including the construction of bridge over Palar river, has been completed. Out of the total 3.2 km, the state highway has to complete 950 meters of road work which includes leveling the road with blue metal and bitumen. Currently, the final phase of leveling is underway at VIT. “The new stretch will reduce travel time on the Bengaluru Highway from Katpadi by at least 30 minutes. Currently, motorists have to stop at five junctions in the area to reach the highway,” said R. Santhosh, a motorist.
Sathuvacari – VIT road is 15 meters wide. According to estimates, at least 17,250 vehicles can use the new section daily after completion.
The road works also included the construction of two smaller bridges and 20 culverts along the route. The new four-lane bridge, which is part of the new road, is 475 meters long and 15 meters wide. the bridge was built 20 feet above the dry riverbed.
For residents and motorists, the new stretch will provide the shortest route between Katpadi and Vellore. Vehicles can take this route to reach the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway and bypass the congested Katpadi flyovers.
