K. Balakrishnan, former owner and editor-in-chief of Express, a erstwhile Malayalam daily based in Thrissur, died in the district on Thursday at the age of 87. A prominent figure in Kerala’s media landscape, he played a key role in shaping the newspaper’s identity and influence over several decades.
Founded in 1944 by his father K. Krishnan, Express became a respected publication under Mr. Balakrishnan’s leadership. He began his journalistic career as a film critic under the pen name “Balaji” and took over as editor-in-chief in November 1970 after the death of his father.
Apart from journalism, he was associated with several institutions, serving as director of Dhanalakshmi Bank and Ambal Chitties. He also ran the Natananikethan, a cultural institution established by his father to promote dance training.
Mr. Balakrishnan stepped down as editor in 1993 after Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy took over the Express. His mortal remains were kept for public homage at his residence on Shoranur Road, Thrissur, before being cremated at the Poonkunnam Brahmasabha crematorium on Thursday.
He is survived by his wife Chandra and children Krishnan and Vidya.
