
US President Donald Trump on Friday congratulated diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu on his appointment as the Governor of Delhi and wished him all the best.
Trump said on Truth Social, “Congratulations to Taranjit Sandhu on becoming the new Governor of Delhi! As a seasoned diplomat and former ambassador to the United States, he has always shown a deep commitment to strengthening US-India relations.” .
“I wish him success in leading Delhi’s progress and deepening global ties,” Trump said.
He served as India’s ambassador to the US from 2020-24.
All about Taranjit Singh Sandhu
Sandhu was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on 5 March. He was part of a major administrative reshuffle of governors and governors across the country. In the reshuffle, Sandhu replaced VK Saxena, who was now appointed as Ladakh LG. Additionally, senior leader Nand Kishore Yadav was appointed as the Governor of Nagaland and Lieutenant General (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain was appointed as the Governor of Bihar.
After taking the oath, he told reporters that Delhi was his “karmabhoomi” (workplace). He called for a solution-oriented approach across party lines to address the challenges facing the nation’s capital.
Sandhu said, “Delhi has several stakeholders and Delhi was also my karmabhoomi (workplace). I studied here and worked here. Together we will work for the development of Delhi. PM Modi has a vision for India and Delhi is the capital. The elected government and all stakeholders have a responsibility. Challenges will continue to rise. But there are challenges in other places, no matter what, to transform opportunities together, we have to work together. It is our perspective. solving different problems.”
After retiring from the Indian Foreign Service, Sandhu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) months before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP fielded Sandhu as its Lok Sabha candidate from Amritsar, which he lost.
