Karnataka rains: Schools closed in some parts of Malnad region

Heavy downpour in several parts of Karnataka’s Malnad region has prompted the local administration to declare holidays for schools and colleges in select taluks.

Primary schools, high schools and anganwadi centers in Koppa, Sringeri and Mudigere taluks of Chikkamagaluru district remained closed on July 7.

In Shivamogga district, schools and anganwadi centers remain closed in Tirthahalli, Sagar and Bhadravati taluks.

Red alert in coastal Karnataka

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka on July 7 and 8, warning of extremely heavy rainfall of more than 204.5 mm.

The red alert will remain in effect until 8:30 a.m. on July 8. It will then be downgraded to an orange warning until 8:30 a.m. on July 9, with very heavy rainfall of 115.6mm to 204.4mm forecast.

Deficit: Vijayapura, Dharwad, Gadag, Belagavi, Koppal, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Hassan, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Davangere, Haveri, Mysuru, Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga.

Large deficit: Chikkamagaluru, Vijayanagar and Kodagu

Normal: Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru South, Kolar, Mandya, Ballari, Bagalkot, Chitradurga, Chamarajanagar, Yadgir and Raichur

Surplus: Tumakuru, Chickballapur and Bengaluru Rural
