The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday (July 6, 2026) took cognizance of the rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal and sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) from Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta within a week.
The ATR would have to cover not only the brutal crime but also the subsequent incidents of mob violence where a man was lynched for his alleged involvement in the crime, central force jawans were attacked and police vehicles were set on fire, the Commission said in a statement.
“The commission has sought details regarding registration of FIR under relevant provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act and POCSO Act, immediate arrest of all persons involved in the alleged rape and murder and progress of investigation,” the statement said.
“The commission further ascertained the details of the investigation into the subsequent mob lynching, the action taken against all those involved, the investigation into possible lapses in police and preventive measures, the conduct of a comprehensive forensic and post-mortem examination, and the medical, psychological, legal and compensatory support provided to the victim’s family,” the statement added.
Stating that the NCW maintains a “zero tolerance policy towards crimes against women and girls”, the statutory body called for a swift, impartial and comprehensive investigation with strict action against all those responsible in accordance with the law.
A six-member special investigation team along with the Baruipur district police arrested three of the four suspects named in the FIR, including the main accused in the case, Ananda Sardar, after night-long search operations and interrogation of three others who were detained.
In Kolkata, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said his government would ensure justice was served to the girl’s family and the perpetrators of the brutal crime were hanged. He added that those caught in the ensuing mob riots and lynchings would also face the full force of the law.
