Students Federation of India (SFI) activists marched to the Income Tax office here on Wednesday (May 13) as part of their nationwide protest against the alleged NEET UG document leak and subsequent cancellation of the exam.
A large number of students from various schools and colleges participated in the protest. The protesters alleged that the central government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) failed to perform their duties properly and “tortured” thousands of students who were rigorously preparing for the competitive examination.
Tensions escalated when the march, which disrupted vehicular traffic, came close to the Income Tax office building. Police used water cannons to disperse the protesters after they allegedly tried to break through barricades erected against the entrance to the secure compound. Some protesters also tried to topple the barricades, leading to a brief confrontation with the police.
Accusing the NTA of gross negligence and demanding accountability for alleged irregularities in the conduct of the examination, the protesters raised slogans and warned that stronger agitations would be organized to ensure justice for the affected students.
Although the situation was tense for some time, a senior police officer said no one was seriously injured. He also said that adequate precautions have been taken in advance to avoid any untoward incidents.
