One passenger died and over 30 others were injured after a sleeper bus overturned on the Ganga Expressway here after a tire burst, police said on Monday (May 11, 2026).
The accident took place near Sarai Piparia village in Musajhaag area around 12.30 pm. The bus was traveling from Khaga in Fatehpur district to Ludhiana, officials said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ankita Sharma said the tire of the sleeper bus burst suddenly near the 202 kilometer point of the highway.
“The driver lost control and the bus overturned three to four times before going over the barrier and falling into the oncoming lane,” Ms Šarmová said.
The passenger, identified as Anuj (34), a resident of Fatehpur area, died on the spot.
“More than 30 passengers sustained injuries in the accident. Six of them are in critical condition and have been referred to Bareilly for advanced treatment,” the SSP said.
Police said several passengers were trapped in the broken bus.
“It was lucky that the bus did not fall into a deep ditch along the expressway. Otherwise, there would have been more victims,” Šarmová added.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, police teams from Musajhaag, Dataganje and nearby police stations along with health department personnel and ambulances rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation.
Officials said rescue workers broke windows and cut through seats to extract trapped passengers.
The injured were admitted to nearby community health centers and the district hospital.
While about 24 passengers sustained minor injuries, six were seriously injured and were taken to the district hospital. Some of them were later sent to a hospital in Bareilly due to their critical condition.
District Magistrate Avneesh Rai said the authorities were closely monitoring the situation.
“A few passengers with minor injuries have been discharged after treatment, six injured remain hospitalized in the district hospital. Some of them have been referred to Bareilly due to the severity of their injuries,” Mr. Rai said.
According to him, preliminary findings indicate that speeding and a flat tire were the likely causes of the accident.
