
A furniture store owner in Bengaluru lost out ₹According to a Deccan Herald report citing the police for 5 crore cyber fraud after downloading a fake wedding invitation sent via WhatsApp.
A 42-year-old resident of Nayandahalli received a file named “Wedding Invitation File Apk” from a number associated with someone he knew. Once he downloaded and opened the APK file, the fraudsters allegedly gained remote access to his mobile phone, according to the report.
Soon after, several unauthorized transactions were made from his bank account, resulting in a loss ₹5 lakhs. When the man realized he was a victim of a cyber scam, he filed a police complaint.
Authorities have registered a case under Section 318 (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act, along with Sections 66C (identity theft) and 66D (cheating persons using computer resources) of the Information Technology Act and an investigation is underway, the report said.
