The results of the recently concluded parliamentary elections in four states (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Assam) and the Union Territory of Puducherry marked a shift in the country’s political footprint. While results in Assam and Puducherry showed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party retaining government, the BJP swept the West Bengal elections and Suvendu Adhikari became the first BJP Chief Minister in Bengal.
In Tamil Nadu, the political drama that unfolded with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), founded by actor C. Joseph Vijay, winning the largest number of seats (108), falling short of the majority by ten seats, finally died down with the Congress leaving the parties extending their support.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) defeated the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), which has been in power in Kerala since 2016.
Saffronization
The maps below show the changing political landscape.
Currently, the BJP or NDA governs 20 states and 2 Union Territories (Puducherry and Delhi), compared to 16 states and 1 UT (Puducherry) in January 2024.
In the maps below, state/UT level allies are mentioned when they are part of the BJP or Congress formed government. Hence, Sikkim – which is part of the NDA – is marked as ‘Other’ as no BJP candidate has won the seat.
