Backward Classes welfare hostels in Andhra Pradesh have emerged as the top performing welfare hostels in the state, according to the government’s Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS), based on a parent feedback survey.
A statement issued by the office of BC Social Affairs Minister S. Savitha on Saturday said the survey revealed a satisfaction rate of 78.20% for BC hostels, placing them ahead of other categories of social hostels. Officials attributed this improvement to the government’s focus on strengthening education, infrastructure, nutrition and welfare support for students.
After assuming office, the coalition government cleared the backlog of the ₹110 crore Diet Bill left behind by the previous government and has since ensured timely payments of diet and cosmetic levies.
In the last 23 months, more than ₹ 100 crore has been spent on repairs to hostel buildings and infrastructure development. Measures such as installation of RO equipment, inverters, mosquito nets, sanitation facilities and digital learning centers have significantly improved the living conditions of students, the report said.
The introduction of facial recognition system (FRS)-based attendance in BC hostels for both students and staff has reportedly saved over ₹6 crore annually by preventing misuse of resources and improving monitoring. To strengthen surveillance, the HPTS mobile app has been launched to enable officials to monitor the implementation of the meal plan, hygiene, drinking water facilities and hostel maintenance through daily photo uploads.
In terms of academics, BC hostel students scored an impressive 85.99% pass rate in the recent class 10 exams.
