
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been appointed as the next Chief of the Naval Staff, the Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday. He is currently serving as the Western Naval Command in Bombay.
Swaminathan will replace Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi and take charge as the Navy Chief on May 31. His term will continue until December 31, 2028.
In an official notification, the Ministry of Defense wrote on X, “Government appoints Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, PVSM, AVSM, VSM as the next Chief of Naval Staff.
“He will replace Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who will retire on May 31, 2026,” the ministry added.
“The Admiral, currently serving as FOC-in-C (Flag Commander-in-Chief), Western Naval Command, brings nearly four decades of distinguished service with extensive operational, strategic and personnel experience in key positions in the Indian Navy,” he said.
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan took over as Chief of Staff on 6 October 2023 and later took over as Commander, Western Naval Command, Bombay.
Who is Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan?
Inducted into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1987, Vice Admiral Swaminathan is a renowned communications and electronic warfare specialist.
Over the course of his distinguished career, he performed a wide variety of critical operational, personnel and training duties.

He commanded an impressive and diverse list of Indian naval vessels, including:
- Missile containers: INS Vidyut and INS Vinash
- Missile corvette: INS Kuliš
- Guided destroyer: INS Mysore

After promotion to Flag rank, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the Southern Naval Command Headquarters in Kochi, where he was highly influential in shaping naval training protocols.
In addition, he spearheaded the establishment of the Indian Navy’s Security Team, a specialized unit overseeing operational security across the military.
His subsequent leadership roles include:
- Flag Officer Naval Training
- Flag Officer Commanding the Western Fleet
- Maritime Defense Flag Officer Advisory Group
- Adviser on Coastal Security and Defense to the Government of India
