The BCCI’s decision to move the IPL 2026 final from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad may have surprised many, especially as defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru were initially in line to host the summit at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. In an official media notification issued on Tuesday, the BCCI confirmed that the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the IPL 2026 final on May 31, despite Bengaluru being initially earmarked as the venue.
Operational and logistical reasons for the shift
“Bengaluru was initially earmarked to host the final. However, due to certain demands of the local association and authorities, which were outside the established BCCI guidelines and protocols, the venue was shifted and allocated,” the adviser said.

Hemang Badani admits ‘perform or perish’ as DC faces must-win situationAs reported by The Timesofindia.com today, it is understood that the ongoing administrative mess over tickets at the Chinnaswamy Stadium has forced the management to shift the title fight back to the venue of the 2025 final. The move also means Ahmedabad will host the IPL final for the fourth time in five seasons, having previously hosted the title clash in 2022, 2023, 2025 and now 2026.Interestingly, this is not the first time that the traditional “defending champions host the finals” convention has been overlooked.
Why Ahmedabad hosted IPL finals in 2022 and 2025
After Chennai Super Kings won the 2021 IPL, there were expectations that Chennai could host the final in 2022 once the tournament fully returns to India after the pandemic disruptions. Instead, the BCCI awarded the playoffs and the final to Ahmedabad. However, reports at the time and the BCCI’s scheduling decisions pointed to a combination of post-COVID logistical planning and crowd capacity.IPL 2022 was still being conducted under considerable operational precautions following the pandemic. The league phase itself has been largely restricted to Maharashtra venues to minimize travel and bio-bubble complications. When the playoff spots were announced, Kolkata hosted Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, while Ahmedabad hosted Qualifier 2 and the Final.A similar situation played out in IPL 2025. After Kolkata Knight Riders lifted the IPL 2024 trophy, Eden Gardens initially won Qualifier 2 and the final as per the usual hosting convention. However, the temporary suspension of the tournament in the wake of India-Pakistan tensions forced the BCCI to extend the period from 25 May to 3 June, greatly complicating scheduling and logistics.

This extension immediately brought attention to the weather. With forecasts predicting an early onset of the Southwest Monsoon over East India, there are growing fears of rain disruption in Kolkata during the final week of the tournament. Ahmedabad was considered a safer option compared to the weather.
