At least two people were killed and three others were wounded Tuesday (local time) after a man opened fire at a shopping mall north of Dallas, Texas, the AP reported, citing police.
Carrollton Chief Roberto Arredondo said it was not a random shooting and that the victims knew the attacker, who was later arrested after a brief foot chase. The 69-year-old suspect was arrested about 6 kilometers away at a grocery store, police said.
Arredondo added: “We don’t know exactly what the meeting was about, but we understand that it is a business relationship.”
A video shared online showed police officers with guns drawn as they walked past a door at K Towne Plaza in an area of the city known as Koreatown. Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other federal agencies were among the law enforcement agencies present at the scene.
Carrollton is 20 miles (32.1 kilometers) north of Dallas. According to the American Community Survey, of Carrollton’s more than 130,000 residents, more than 4,000 are of Korean descent.
Over the past 20 years, thanks to Korean investors, it has grown into a thriving Koreatown for the Dallas metro area. It is anchored by major businesses such as the H-Mart supermarket, as well as dozens of Korean restaurants offering everything from Korean fried chicken to iced desserts. The city is also home to several Korean churches, from Baptist to Presbyterian.
This is a developing story. Further details were awaited.
