The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in Delhi on Tuesday as several parts of the national capital saw hail and thundershowers bringing some relief from the sweltering heat. While the off-season rain has soothed a few souls, it could spoil it at the Arun Jaitley Stadium as Delhi Capitals host Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a mid-table Indian Premier League (IPL) clash.
Both Delhi Capitals and CSK are in contention to make the playoffs if they win all their remaining matches. Both have eight points from nine matches each, but CSK are placed sixth compared to seventh-placed Delhi Capitals thanks to their superior net rating (NRR). A loss or rain could put their dreams of a final four spot in jeopardy.
Rain, hail and thundershowers are expected in parts of New Delhi, Central Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi, Outer North Delhi, North East Delhi, Shahdar and East Delhi, South and South West Delhi as per orange alert issued. Notably, temperatures dropped in several areas due to a change in weather with dark clouds over the city.
Accuweather.com did show a lower chance of rain, but nothing can be guaranteed with the weather. The temperature is expected to be around 33 degrees.
- Punjab Kings lead the IPL 2026 points table with 13 points, followed by four teams – Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans – who are level at 12 points each. Certainly 15 points is not enough to advance to the playoffs.
Delhi pitch report for DC vs CSK
Just before the coin toss, former England captain Eoin Morgan spoke about the rain alongside Ian Bishop. “Bish, it’s nice to be here but I’ll tell you what, we had a bit of rain this afternoon and last night, so thank heavens I hope we don’t see any more tonight,” Morgan said.
“But that means it’s a touch cooler, Bishi, and we’ve had everything from being bowled out for 75 to 260 at this stadium and it’s not enough,” added the former England captain, who won the ODI World Cup in 2019. As for the pitch, the wicket is rock hard and should be really good to bat on. In the first hours there will be a swing.
