Hyderabad Police have busted a major Indian Premier League ticket scam linked to the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders at the Uppal Stadium on May 3. KKR won the match by seven wickets after Varun Chakaravarthy produced a winning spell of 3/36 in four overs.
On Tuesday evening, Malkajgiri Police Commissioner’s official X clique revealed that the Uppal police, who were deployed at the stadium for security duties, had cracked down on black marketers of IPL tickets.
“Uppal police cracked down on black marketing of IPL tickets during bandobus service at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium on May 3, 2026,” the statement said. “Based on credible information, the three accused were caught red-handed selling high value free IPL tickets (worth £22,000) at inflated prices.”
The police further said that investigations revealed that the accused were impersonating VIPs and VVIPs to illegally procure tickets and sell them at a substantial profit.
“The accused forged VIP/VVIP (Judges, Ministers, Governors) letterheads to illegally procure tickets from cricket associations and sell them for profit,” the statement added. Uppal Stadium IPL Ticket Scam (Screenshot from X)
According to the police, it involved the misuse of official-looking documents to gain access to free tickets intended for dignitaries, which were then resold on the black market at much higher prices. Authorities said the operation was carried out as planned and was under surveillance based on credible inputs.
Among the items seized from the accused were a Mahindra Thar vehicle, five IPL tickets, five mobile phones and fake letterheads used in the scam. The accused were brought to court the following day for further court proceedings.
Police also issued a strong advisory to the public, urging fans and spectators not to buy tickets from unauthorized sellers or black market operators. They warned that such transactions not only result in financial loss, but may also have legal consequences for buyers.
The authorities have reiterated that IPL tickets should only be purchased through official and authorized channels and that strict action will continue against those involved in illegal ticket sales or rigging of sporting events.
