In the northern districts, many seats were won by the Dravidian majors — DMK and AIADMK — with TVK continuing its giant killing spree but having to settle for fewer seats compared to Chennai and surrounding districts.
In another shock, DMK senior minister and general secretary Duraimurugan was relegated to the third position in the Katpadi Assembly constituency. After winning consecutive elections since 1996 in the Tamil Nadu assembly poll, he was unlucky this time as TVK’s candidate Dr. M. Sudhakar got a total of 69,868 votes. AIADMK’s V. Ramu polled 63,998 votes to finish second, while Mr. Duraimurugan, who polled 62,225 votes, came third.
