Aziz Ansari made a surprise return to Saturday Night Live this weekend, appearing as FBI Director Kash Patel in a politically charged cold snap that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the show’s final episode.
Aziz Ansari steals the spotlight with a surprise SNL appearance
The surprise cameo came during an episode hosted by pop star Olivia Rodrigo, who was also the evening’s musical guest.
The sketch opened with a mock White House press briefing led by cast member Ashley Padilla as press secretary Karoline Leavitt, before handing over to Colin Jost’s portrayal of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The scene then shifted as Ansari entered as Patel, drawing loud applause from the studio audience and marking his first major live appearance on the program in several years.
Ansari’s performance leaned heavily on satire, with the comedian delivering one of the sketch’s most quoted lines: “I’m the first Indian to suck my job.”
He followed it up with another sharp point: “I prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that we can be just as incompetent as whites.
Asked by a gathering of SNL cast members posing as reporters if he was leaving, the controversial and rumored soon-to-be-fired Patel said: “Hell, no! President Trump loves me. Everyone loves me, even the Correspondents’ Dinner shooter said, ‘Kill everyone but Mr. Patel.’ When a psychopath’s manifesto has that kind of outcry, you’ve got to be doing something right.”
The episode itself marked an important moment for Rodrigo, who made her guest debut as well as performing as the musical guest. The singer performed two musical performances, including a live debut of a new track, but much of the immediate post-performance discussion focused on Ansari’s surprise appearance. Reviews from major US outlets described the cold opening as the comedy highlight of the night.
Audience loved and responded to Ansari’s look. Various fans were surprised that he came to the show after such a long time.
While one person wrote: “Crazy they got Kash to actually appear on the show (sic), another commented: “Aziz rolled his eyes just like Kash Patel is just too funny (sic).
A third person pointed out how Colin tries hard not to break character, saying: “I love every moment when Colin drops a line and then tries his hardest not to smile (sic).
Another person commented: “I lost it when Ansari said, “I’m the first Indian to suck their work.” Brilliant! (sic).”
“Aziz Ansari as Kash Patel wasn’t on my 2026 bingo card 😂 Cool (sic)!” wrote a fan under the official YouTube video.
Ansari, best known for Master of None and Parks and Recreation, has a long association with Saturday Night Live, having hosted the program in the past. His latest performance seems to have struck a chord with audiences, with many praising his casting choices and his sharp comic delivery.
The sketch added another memorable moment of political satire to the current season of SNL and gave viewers one of the biggest surprises of the night even before the show had even begun.
