Riyan Parag finally came through when the pressure was on him and put aside talk of his form and off-field controversy as he bowled Rajasthan Royals against Delhi Capitals with a well-paced 90. It came at a time when RR needed their captain to take control of the innings and more importantly hold it together after a shaky start.
This wasn’t a situation built for easy runs either. RR’s powerplay plans were disrupted almost immediately at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium when Mitchell Starc removed Yashasvi Jaiswal in the opener. Kyle Jamieson fires Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for 4 in the next. From a position where another fast start was expected, RR were suddenly 12 for 2 in 1.3 overs and staring at a completely different kind of innings.
IPL 2026, RR vs DC: Update | Scorecard
This shift in the situation required composure rather than aggression and Parag read it well from the moment he entered. He didn’t look rushed, nor did he attempt a blind counterattack. Instead, he focused on settling things down without letting the points drop, gradually pulling RR back into the game with a combination of controlled hitting and clever spin.
HOW RIYAN PARAG DID FOR RR VS DC?
Parago’s innings was built on situational awareness rather than one phase of dominance. After those early wickets, he ensured that RR were back to 56 for 2 by the end of the over, which felt more like a strong recovery than a routine score given the start.
A key phase came in his partnership with Dhruv Jurel. The two added 102 runs and took RR from a position of early trouble to a position of control without forcing the game. Parag was content to pick the gaps, punish the loose balls and let the innings grow rather than trying to accelerate too early.
Even when Jurel fell to Axar Patel, the rhythm was not broken. In a bit of a surprise move, Ravindra Jadeja got to No.5 ahead of Donovan Ferreira and Parag followed suit, adding another 53 runs with him. By then, RR had completely bounced back from the early collapse and was building toward a strong total.
Parag eventually fell for 90, missing out on what looked like a certain first IPL hundred dismissed by Starc. But the timing of the knock mattered more than the milestone. Coming into the match, Parag had managed just 117 in his previous nine innings.
This knock vs DC was the kind of innings RR needed from their skipper.
RIYAN PARAG SLAYS CRITICISM AND VAPING ROW
Parag’s IPL 2026 did not stay in sight. The runs didn’t come consistently, his captaincy was questioned in patches, and the vaping incident against the Punjab Kingswhich resulted in a 25 percent fine and demerit point, only adding to the attention around him.
Therefore, this shift carried a little more weight than usual. It didn’t come in a comfortable phase or after a strong start for the team. RR were 12 for 2 and the game could have shifted quickly had they lost another wicket in this period.
Instead, Parag absorbed that pressure, controlled the pace and allowed RR to rebuild without losing direction. It might not change the entire narrative surrounding his season overnight, but it does underscore what he can offer when the situation improves, especially in games where the team needs consistency as much as runs.
