
Social activist Dijo Kappan, 68, died on Friday (May 1, 2026) at Pala in Kottayam. He breathed his last at a private hospital where he was undergoing treatment following injuries sustained in a car accident in October last year in Thiruvananthapuram.
An anti-corruption crusader, Kappan was known for his activism focused on consumer rights and awareness. In 1988, he founded the Center for Consumer Education, which focused on protecting the rights of consumers and farmers. As administrator of the center, he led several legal disputes. His notable legal interventions include various public causes such as increase in electricity charges and road tax, the waste management crisis in Kochi and the nuisance caused by display of billboards on public roads. He led a long-running fight against obstacles to allowing insurance claims for victims of road accidents.
