While the Indian Premier League continues to entertain fans with exciting contests and emerging young stars, many matches this season have stretched far beyond the expected three-hour window, sometimes over four hours.This began to test the patience of the audience. Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced penalties for slow rate overruns, lateness remains a recurring problem.

He pointed out that backup players and support staff often go to the ground, even for small things like serving drinks.“We often see the unnecessary sight of fielders stepping on the ground to give a bottle of water to a fielder near the boundary. This should not be allowed as it effectively means more than 11 players on the field when the game is on, even if it is between deliveries,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-day. “During strategic time-outs, you often see half a dozen people on the field, including the batsmen yet to come in. That’s too far. Apart from the two infielders carrying the drinks and two members of the coaching staff, no one else should be allowed on the ground.”
It requires stricter rules and faster gameplay
He also emphasized maintaining discipline and respect for the industry, recalling Richie Benaud’s advice.“As Richie Benaud once told me early in my broadcasting career, the ground is a sacred place and only those who are officiating and playing should enter it. That’s why, when I’m not doing a pitch report or a TV show, I rarely step onto the pitch. Hopefully the BCCI will also ensure that members of the All Access Accreditation Committee don’t cross the line. Please don’t cross the line.“Since all batters are already in the dugout, the two-minute limit can be reduced to one minute. If the batter is still not ready to face the pitcher, after several warnings, runs should be called.”
