US-Iran peace talks in limbo after Abbas Araghchi leaves Pakistan
After Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left Pakistan on Saturday, prospects for direct talks between the United States and Tehran to end the eight-week war remain slim. An Iranian diplomat met with mediators in Islamabad ahead of a planned weekend meeting with the US delegation. According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, the top diplomat left the city after revealing Iran’s “observations” in a two-hour meeting.
Saturday’s peace talks failed to materialize, marking a new setback to peace prospects as US President Donald Trump canceled a trip by US envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner to an Iran war mediator following the latest development.
Analysts said India, the world’s third-largest oil buyer, increased purchases of Russian crude and resumed alternative supplies from Africa, Iran and Venezuela amid a sharp shortage of oil from the crisis-torn Middle East region, AFP reported. As India grapples with cooking gas supply disruptions due to heavy reliance on imports, fuel imports from Russia have surged in the previous two months. Refiners imported an average of nearly 1.98 million barrels per day (bpd) in March, AFP reported, citing data from trade intelligence firm Kpler.
